Why You Shouldn't Skip Sunscreen?

Wear SPF daily! You will thank your younger self in 20-30 years.

Not only will tanning not improve your acne, but it will also cause more harm to your skin, causing wrinkles and a high chance of skin cancer.

Applying sunscreen is definitely imperative all year round. Let’s take a deeper look.

Before we get into more detail on the right ingredients to have in your sunscreen, let’s first look at the steps of applying and benefits. There’s a lot to learn about sunscreen.

When it comes to applying Sunscreen, it is more effective when applying correctly before/ after exposing your skin to the sun. Here are some steps to help you get started.

How to Apply Sunscreen

  • Apply 30 mins before exposing your skin to the sun. After 3 hours of being outside, reapply sunscreen.

  • During any water or any outdoor activities, reapply sunscreen right after, not all sunscreens will give 100% waterproof coverage.

  • Make sure to rub the sunscreen properly with the right amount of layering and cover all over your skin, including the face, neck, lips, hands, etc.

  • For women wearing makeup; after cleansing their face be sure to first apply sunscreen on clean skin, followed by your daily makeup regimes.

Benefits of wearing sunscreen

Reduces the risk of developing skin cancer

Often, people think sunscreen is only to be worn outside when it is sunny and only during summer. Wrong! You will be reducing more chances of skin diseases when you wear sunscreen even during cloudy or rainy days.

The lights that we use indoors are just as harmful to our skin and consume more electric power which is also less sustainable for the environment.

Wearing sunscreen on snowy days will actually slow down aging. Crazy right!? When we think of UVA (Ultraviolet) also known as “long wave” rays, that reaches 95 percent of the rays on the surface of the Earth, causing deeper penetration in your skin than UVB rays. Another dangerous fact is that it causes various signs of aging like dark spots, wrinkles, breakage of collagen, and discoloration.

On the other hand UVB (Ultraviolet B) is called “shortwave” rays, which don’t penetrate as profoundly as UVA. They cause more sunburns and redness to the skin. UVB occurs from spring and throughout winter because when the rays reach the Earth’s surface it is easily reflecting off ice and snow.

Often, people ease out on sunscreen during winter but the UVA and UVB rays are just as present even during cloudy and colder months. UVA rays can sneak through our clothes causing further harm to our skin. This is why it is imperative to wear sunscreen all year round and even during winter.

Sunscreen helps reduce signs of aging

Forever young is clearly a myth when it comes to appearance but sunscreen can help prevent premature signs of aging. Studies show that applying sunscreen every day reduces 24 percent less chance of discoloration, aging, and skin cancer. In addition, it helps to keep the skin tone even and smooth.

Ozone depletion and climate change

The carbon footprint has made a huge impact on climate change from plastic consumptions, fossil fuels, greenhouse gases, constant deforestation, and synthetic food. Climate change is increasing more UV rays to the earth's surface and causing further skin damage. Ozone absorbs harmful UVA before reaching the ground and as ozone depletes, your body would require more added protection.

Choosing the right sunscreen

Beware, not all sunscreens are safe to use!

There are endless brands when it comes to sunscreen but do you actually take your time to purchase the right one or just pick the first sunscreen that you see off the shelf?

When it comes to skincare don’t cheap out, make sure you invest in a sunscreen that is best suitable for your skin and for the environment.
